The Federal Government has started talks with big retailers about resolving the growing baby formula shortage, as Chinese demand continues to strip local supplies.

Parents have complained publicly for months about a shortage of their preferred brands of infant formula.

There have been reports of customers stripping supermarket shelves of formula, and selling the tins online to Chinese customers at an inflated cost.

With 20 million babies born in China each year and only a quarter of them breastfed, the country's baby formula market is growing.

Demand for high quality products perceived as safe by Chinese customers has grown rapidly in recent years, following an incident in 2008 when children died from drinking contaminated Chinese formula.

Sydney mother Katie Camarena told the ABC she struggled for six weeks to find a steady supply of her 10-month-old son's preferred brand of formula.

Assistant Trade Minister Richard Colbeck told the ABC in a statement that he was investigating a solution.

"Booming international demand for our high quality dairy products is great news for our local dairy industry but we must also ensure supply is available locally," he said.

"I have been talking with supermarkets and pharmacy representatives today about ways we can ensure local parents have access to reliable supplies of infant formula."

The minister is expected to release more detail on Thursday.
